It’s been burned into our muscle memories: slide to unlock your iPhone.
Then Apple messed it all up last week with the new lock screen in iOS 10. But fear not, you don’t have to feel like a complete idiot every time you try to unlock your phone.
First thing, step back and understand the new layout: The password-unlock screen that once lived to the left of the lock screen (swipe left to right), has now been replaced with a widget screen that displays the latest weather, news, etc. To the right of the lock screen is the camera (swipe right to left). To get to the password-unlock screen—or to simply unlock the phone with your fingerprint—press down on the home button.
That brings us to the second major change: Yes, you need to press firmly down on the home button to unlock the phone with your fingerprint, instead of just resting your finger on it. (This applies to the iPhone 5s and later models.)
Turns out, Apple made this change for a good reason. When you rest your fingerprint on the home button, it unlocks the lock screen so you can interact with notifications or widgets with private information. (Watch the padlock at the top of the screen go from locked to unlocked when you rest your finger.) Pressing firmly unlocks the whole phone, taking you to your home screen.
