Smartphones and tablets have emerged as the best television companions since the Barcalounger. What better to do during two minutes of commercials than check e-mails, fire off a text or engage in some Words With Friends smack talk?
But relatively few people know what mobile devices can do to enrich the other 28 minutes of a half-hour television slot. With apps like BuddyTV Guide (free on Apple and Android) and Peel (free on Apple and Android), you can find good shows much more efficiently than you would by channel surfing.
Of the three, I liked BuddyTV the most. The company’s catchphrase, “find something to watch in 20 seconds or less,” generally held true for me.
