Sometimes it seems as if we’re living under a constant barrage of heavy news. But it isn’t all bad out there. This feature is meant to send you into the weekend with a smile, or at least a lighter heart.
Note: The Week in Good News is back after a few weeks off to care for an ailing parent. Good news: He’s doing better.
Here are seven great things we wrote about this week:
A single $29 million donation will fund more than 35,000 school and classroom projects.
The gift is the largest ever received by DonorsChoose.org, a crowdfunding website for classrooms. It came after the nonprofit’s founder reached out to Ripple, a virtual currency company, with an ambitious proposal: What if the company fulfilled every request for teaching equipment, technology and supplies on the website?
Well, it never hurts to ask.
“It’s just a subject that we all care very passionately about and we were in a position to make it happen,” said Monica Long, the senior vice president for marketing at Ripple.
The projects included a class seeking supplies for the homeless and a teacher asking to stock a library to serve low-income students and refugees.
